Alcohol is a part of our culture, but its often one of the main “enemies” when it comes to health and fitness goals. Of course you shouldn’t drink excessive amounts of alcohol, but there is a way to still enjoy a drink or two with your friends and family while you accomplish your health and fitness goals, in this post i will explain to you how to do this and we will discuss some aspects of alcohol.

Don’t make this fitness mistake

In younger years, I was decided I was going to get in the best shape of my life. This meant that I was cutting calories until I was shredded ( no libido when getting sub 10% bodyfat, poor ex gf) I was going to cut drinking out of my life ( everyone saw me as the boring dude) and I needed to sleep at least 8 hours ( no parties for me) so I was so focused on bodybuilding and I can’t take those years back. The funny thing is that I couldn’t sleep anyway since I was aware of all the fun I was missing, I couldn’t drink so I missed out on social gatherings and I sacrificed all of that for what? An extra 5 pounds of muscle in a natural bodybuilder? I can tell you that it wasn’t worth it.

I missed on so much just because I thought that getting in shape will somehow make all my problems disappear, funny enough it just made me a more frustrated human being. I have no top tier genetics so i was never going to make it to a pro stage or something like that anyway so basically all that time was wasted (I also followed bro science trainers) I wish that I could live those years differently. But that’s in the past now and I don’t want that to happen to you. Of course if you are happy taking this route that’s great, I certainly wasn’t. So let me show you a way of drinking and still having fun while staying on track with your fitness progress! If you ask me, its not worth it to be absolutely obsessed with fitness.

The main problem with alcohol (calories)

One of the problems of losing weight is eating too many calories. This is specially true with any type of liquid calories. It is very easy to drink too many calories and this is why I only recommend zero calorie drinks if you are trying to lose weight.

A lot of people are not aware that alcohol has calories, it has 7 calories per gram and your average beer has about 150 calories with 99 calories being the lowest (typically). So if you drink six beers you will consume at least 600 calories! That is the average daily deficit  to lose weight, so it is very easy to overconsume alcohol calories.  This is why if you are losing weight you need to be aware of the caloric content of alcohol. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some drinks but you need to do it the right way.

You don’t make smart choices while drunk

I’m sure that if you’ve been drunk you already know what i am talking about. The reality is that you do not make the best dietary choices (or overall choices). This means that if you are really drunk multiple times per week you will likely end up eating fast food a lot more often than you’d like. This is also known as the “fuck it” effect.

Alcohol in an excessive way is not healthy

Please take into consideration the word excessive. It has been suggested that some ingestion of alcohol is actually healthy and this may or may not be true. For sure you don’t need alcohol to be healthy or to survive. But excessive alcohol consumption is a very unhealthy habit that can produce more unhealthy habits and you can develop a dependence. I am not going to go over the specific effects, but you shouldn’t get wasted every time you have the chance too. I personally think that you will have a better time with just a few drinks and remembering the whole night the next day!

Best types of alcohol to consume

You need to focus on consuming the drinks that will not give you a lot of extra calories. For this you will focus on light beer, and drinks with diet soda and a specific liquor like tequila, Rum, whisky. Shots will be a great option here. Sparking water and any type of liquor is also ok. Just make sure that your drinks don’t have more than 200 calories and ideally have around 100-150. You will need to do a little research by yourself but just use logic. Also, make sure that you typically have a limit too, ex; a limit on your number of drinks. Save calories for drinking the days that you will drink ( eat less since you will have extra calories from the alcohol) and you will be just fine!

You don’t need to be super obsessed but you just need to learn to have some moderation when it comes to your diet. Remember that you can eat pretty much anything its the quantities that matter.

Conclusion

You can have a life, but you also need to have some knowledge and moderation in your life, this is what balance looks like. This way you can stay on track and still enjoy a few drinks with your friends and family and don’t miss out on life. Excessive drinking is also expensive so you can save some money for supplements, training gear, books or other things than may add value to your life(you decide this those were just examples). You will save money, be happier and stay on track with your goals without missing out on life you just need to:

  • Eat less the days you drink
  • Stick to low calorie drinks
  • Have a max of 5 drinks when you decide to drink
  • Enjoy yourself!

That’s your guide to drinking alcohol and staying in shape (build muscle, maintain muscle or lose fat). If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below and i will be happy to answer you!
